Eternal Friends

Inspired by the following verses from the Bible, “For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” Psalm 91:11-12

This sculpture, one of Delesprie’s smallest pieces has an essence of childlike innocence that is captivating. The imagination runs wild with possible scenarios explaining how this young, maternal-minded angel came upon these two children who now sit beside her on a wooden log, protected beneath the shelter of her wings. Had the children been playing hide and seek in a dense forest when darkness fell, and they were unable to locate each other, much less their homes? Did they instinctively know their rescuer? Delesprie delights in hearing the stories as varied as the individuals who create them.

The children on either side of the angel can be either friends or siblings. She perches on the log, half-sitting, half-kneeling with her chin resting on one hand as if intent on what the angel is saying or else in deep reverie. Both children are leaning into the angel, a true illustration of childlike trust.

The biggest mystery is the topic of conversation among the three of them. Is the angel revealing Heavenly details that peak the curiosity of her listeners, or simply telling an engaging story?
